Nacho Ambriz played for a variety of clubs in Mexico, but he is most known for his three seasons with Necaxa, during which he was a part of two championship-winning seasons in 1994 and 1996. He played 64 times for Mexico between 1992 and 1995, scoring six goals. He was the captain of the squad in the 1994 FIFA World Cup, in which he played in all four games. He was also a member of the 1993 CONCACAF Gold Cup-winning National Team.
Ambriz began his coaching career with the Mexican national team in 2002, where he helped Javier Auguiree in the 2002 FiFA World Cup.
Following his time with the national team, he joined Puebla, where he played only seven games. In 2003, he worked as an assistant to Javier Aguirre at Osasuna and Atlético de Madrid in Spain. When Aguirre was fired from his Madrid post in 2009, they split up. He also managed San Luis from 2009 to 2011 and Guadalajara in 2012, although just for twelve matches each time.
After sacking Sergio Bueno following a 3–0 loss against Club América at Estadio Azteca, Querétaro President Adolfo Ros appointed Ambrz as the club’s new manager on February 4, 2013. He was the club’s manager until February 2015, when he was fired following a streak of poor performances during the Clausura tournament.
Ambrz was named the new manager of Club América on May 26, 2015, after signing a two-year deal. He guided América to a dismal performance at the FIFA Club World Cup, losing in the quarter-finals to Chinese club Guangzhou Evergrande and defeating Congolese club TP Mazembe to finish fifth.
The next year, Ambrz guided América to the CONCACAF Champions League finals, when they defeated Tigres UANL 4–1 on aggregate to qualify for the 2016 FIFA Club World Cup.
According to the Football Coach World Ranking, he was regarded as the 10th best coach in September that year. Following a 2–0 home loss to León on September 17, Ambrz was fired as manager the next day.
Ambrz was appointed manager of Necaxa for a year in August 2017, winning the Clausura 2018 Copa MX with the club, defeating Toluca 1–0 in the final to end the club’s 19-year trophy drought. While he is currently managing Liga Mx Club Toluca, he dreams to managing a top European club some day.
