The name Griffey is synonymous with great athletes, and the next in line to run with this baton is young Tevin Griffey. The athlete is a powerful cornerback player and bad news for Receivers. He recently started playing the Safety position.
Tevis is the first player on National Signing Day to join FAMU, he is swift with amazing tackling skills. He might not be as famous as his father yet, he does stand out like a sore thumb but in a good way. Below are all the facts we know.
How old is Tevin Griffey?
Tevin Griffey is one of three children born to Ken Griffey Jr. and Melissa Griffey and raised in Orlando, Florida. Tevin is the youngest, born in 2002, seven years after his sister, Taryn Kennedy, and eight years after his brother, Trey Griffey.
Little Tevin attended Dr. Philips High school in his hometown, Orlando, Florida, where he started his football career. He will be celebrating his 20th birthday on May 5th, 2022.
Tevin was Born into a Family of SportsMen
The family thread of sportsmen started from Tevin’s grandfather, George Kenneth Griffey, popularly known as Ken Griffey Sr. He played Major League Baseball and is a Cincinnati Reds Hall of Famer. Tevin’s father, Ken Griffet Jr., also played in Major League Baseball and is a Baseball Hall of Famer.
It wasn’t a surprise when all children ventured into a sport like their father and grandfather.
Trey Griffey, Tevis’ brother, is also a former American football wide receiver. He played college football for the University of California. Tevis’ sister, Taryn Kennedy, is a basketball player who has already begun to make a mark in the Women’s Basketball League.
Tevin and his siblings stated that they don’t feel any pressure to fill their father’s shoes because to them – he is neither an outstanding baseball legend nor a baseball Hall of Famer, he is just our dad and he is very good at it. You could say he deserves a “Best Dad Award” since his kids shrugged away his whole superstar thingy like it’s nothing.
Tevis’ Father Attempted Suicide
At age 18, Tevis’s father was riddled with depression, anger, and worn out by his teammates and family. His career was weighing down on him and his father was never on his side. Having crossed to the NLB from high school, there was so much pressure on the young athlete and he just couldn’t meet up with the expectations.
In order to end his suffering, he decided to take his own life by swallowing 277 aspirin pills. Thankfully, his girlfriend’s mother rushed him to the hospital and he was placed in the ICU. Even at the hospital, Ken and his father still argued with him and ripped out the IV connected to him.
However, Griffey said he now has a good relationship with his father but he will never forget January 1988.
Tevis Griffey Committed to FAMU
With an outstanding high school football performance at Dr. Phillips High School, Tevis was sought out by schools such as Toledo and Michigan. After careful consideration and buttering by Willie Simmons and his coaching staff, the three-star defensive back decided to settle for something close to home, the Florida A&M Rattlers.
The cornerback officially announced to his fans through his Twitter account in late January 2020 that he has decided to rattle for the Rattlers. Due to the pandemic, Tevis didn’t play football for the Rattlers until his Redshirt Freshman year on 23rd October 2021, a scrimmage against Jackson State.
